Spiritual DNA

I John 5:1-5

The Lord once told a very religious man name Nicodemus, that he must be “born again” to go to heaven. If a person is truly “born again,” then there will be certain spiritual, genetic markers or indicators in that person’s life. Today we examine these indicators.

v. 1-2 An affection for God’s children.

v. 3 A desire to apply God’s commandments in their life.

v. 4-5 An aversion to the world.

Romans 12:1-2

Faith is acting on God’s promises.

The Real Deal

James 2:14-26

Today we will look at James’ discussion of three kinds of faith.  One is true faith and the other two are imposters.  We will see that we are justified by faith and faith alone.  But a true faith will always be followed by good works.

o   Matthew 7:21

Ø  A Demonic faith (v. 18-19)

Ø  A Doing faith (v. 20-26)

o   Ephesians 2:8-10

In Better Hands

Mark 4:35-41

Allstate insurance bills themselves as the "Good hands people."  By so doing, their goal is to convey to us that we can trust them when mayhem comes our way.  Maybe they are the "good hands people," but I would prefer to entrust my life to the "Better Hands Person."

God keeps the ship of our lives on course.  v. 35-36   Christ promises He will be with us through life's storms.

God sometimes allows the storms of life to come fast and furious.  v. 37
These storms can come as a result of our disobedience, as discipline, or God allows them to increase our faith.

God can handle the storms of our life.  v. 38-41
We get angry with God because of fear - fear of what we will lose.  We must not let fear overwhelm our faith.

Peace is not the absence of a storm or troubles; rather it is the presence of Christ in the midst of our storm.

Spiritual Warfare Series - Battle for your Mind

Ephesians 6:10-17

Again, we see a Roman soldier standing nearby as the Apostle Paul pens these words and we notice he is wearing appropriate head gear, because when people are swinging swords and spiked balls around, it is a pretty good idea to protect the head.  Today we want to transfer that image to the spiritual realm and talk about "taking up" the helmet of salvation.

Salvation means "to deliver" and it comes as a 3 phase process in the Christian's life.
1.  Justification - (Past) We are justified by faith apart from the law.  We are delivered from the penalty of sin.  Romans 3:28, John 3:16, Romans 5:8

2.  Glorification - (Future) We are glorified at the point of death because we are delivered from the presence of sin.  Ephesians 5:25-27, Revelation 21:1-4

3.  Sanctification - (Present) Taking up the helmet of salvation.  The daily Christian life being conformed to the image of Christ.  2 Corinthians 3:18, Romans 12:1-2

How are we delivered from the "power" of Sin?  Ephesians 2:8-10
1.  Grace - God's undeserved favor.  We do nothing to earn God's grace.
2.  Faith - We plug into God's power through faith.
Good works do not save us but if we are saved, good works will follow.

How do we grow in our faith?  John 17:14-17Jesus prayed to the Father to keep us from the evil one.
