Love is as Love Does

I John 3:11-18

In the book of I John, the author repeatedly returns to three truths. Each truth, if evident in a person’s life, is an indicator or proof that helps a person know they are truly in the faith. Today’s message is about the “social/affection test” and a person’s love for the brethren.

v. 11-13 - An expounding upon the subject of love.
Ref: Matthew 22:33-40 - Love Commandments
Hebrews 9:22

v. 14-15 - The evidence of life - Loving the brethren

v. 16 - The ultimate example of love. Christ demonstrated love by his self-sacrifice/ laying down His life for us.

v. 17-18 - One practical expression of love. - Action love - Help someone in need.
Ref: Galatians 6:10 - Love in action!

The Love God Hates

I John 2:12-17

We recently learned how a person’s deep, abiding love for the brethren was an indicator or sign that person was truly in the faith. Today’s study shows how a love for the world might indicate something else. Let me show you four reasons why a Christian should not get too cozy with the world.

v. 12-14 - Reason #1 - Who is the Christian?
reference: I John 5:12-13; I Peter 2:1-3; 2 Peter 3:17-18

v. 15 - Reason #2 - What is the world?
Kosmos = the anti-God/Anti-Bible world system
Ephesians 6:11-12

v. 15-16 - Reason #3 What does the world do to us?
Saps our spiritual vitality!
I John 1:9

v. 17 - Reason #4 - Where is the world going?
Matthew 7:24-27

Perfected Love

I John 2:3-6

“Perfected love” - meaning our “love of God” and how that love matures and grows. What does our growing and maturing love for God look like?

v. 3-4 Experiential knowledge - How can we know?

This is our moral test/ our obedience test and is a strong indicator of faith. Is there a hunger and desire to obey God? Our fruit, our desires, will demonstrate our love for God.

Scripture references: 2 Timothy 1:12 and Matthew 7:21-23

v. 5 - How do we grow?

This is our attitude test. What is our attitude toward God’s Word? We have to be willing to do God’s will or He won’t reveal it to us.

Scripture references: I John 4:19, Psalm 119:105, and John 14:15

v. 6 - Abide in Christ - How we show - we walk in the Lord’s footsteps.

Scripture references: John 15:1-5 and Proverbs 28:13

The Christian life is a maturing/growing/perfecting process!
