Run the Race Well

Hebrews 12:1-3

The Bible compares the Christian life to a foot race. We need to understand, it is more like a marathon than a sprint, and as Christians, we need to finish the race well.

> How do we run the race well? By running hard to the end!
Commitment, Sacrifice, Rearranging our priorities not just giving our spare time/
We must be ALL in!

> Why do we run the race well?
Because we love our Savior! Romans 5:8
Because we do not want to be disqualified! I Corinthians 9:24-27
Because we will receive a reward! 2 Timothy 4:6-8

> What is the basis for race rewards? FAITHFULNESS! I Corinthians 4:1-2

> Who decides who gets what rewards? JESUS CHRIST! 2 Corinthians 5:10

10-10-9

I John 3:4-10

A world class gymnast will strive to receive a perfect score of three “10’s” in every event. Very few achieve that perfection. Likewise, a Christian will not achieve sinless perfection this side of heaven, but our passage today can show us how to live a more Christ-like life.

v. 4-5 - Rest in His provision - Our nature is to rebel against authority.

Ref James 2:10 Jesus came to take away sins because He is sinless.

v. 6-8 - Revise our old practice - Making the right choice should be the norm.

v. 9-10 - Rely on His power - Christ implants a new seed/ a new nature within us. As Christians, we have a chance to live a victorious life.

Ref I Corinthians 15:45 - We have 2 natures - the one we feed the most will win!

Perfected Love

I John 2:3-6

“Perfected love” - meaning our “love of God” and how that love matures and grows. What does our growing and maturing love for God look like?

v. 3-4 Experiential knowledge - How can we know?

This is our moral test/ our obedience test and is a strong indicator of faith. Is there a hunger and desire to obey God? Our fruit, our desires, will demonstrate our love for God.

Scripture references: 2 Timothy 1:12 and Matthew 7:21-23

v. 5 - How do we grow?

This is our attitude test. What is our attitude toward God’s Word? We have to be willing to do God’s will or He won’t reveal it to us.

Scripture references: I John 4:19, Psalm 119:105, and John 14:15

v. 6 - Abide in Christ - How we show - we walk in the Lord’s footsteps.

Scripture references: John 15:1-5 and Proverbs 28:13

The Christian life is a maturing/growing/perfecting process!

Tonight Might be the Night

Luke 12:16-21

Today we look at a parable about a man who knew in advance his time of death.  Most people do not have this knowledge.  And, if surveyed, some would want to know the date to get their affairs in order, but many would not want the knowledge hanging over their heads.  As we study this man's story, it should put life, death, things and God into their proper perspective.

If you knew tonight was your last night on Earth, how would you spend your day?
If I knew tonight was my last night to live:

* I would want to be sure of my place in heaven.

* I would want to right any wrongs with other people (ref Matthew 6:14-15)

* I would want to share Christ with others.

Matthew 22:41-42 - Who is the Christ?

John 6:37 - Will you give Christ His rightful place in your life?

2 Timothy 4:6-7 - Facing the end of his life, Paul said, "I have fought the good fight, finished the course, I have kept the faith?

Are you ready?
